Casa Montelongo
A restored 19th-century Canarian house in the volcanic heart of Fuerteventura
Set in the historic heart of La Oliva, amid Fuerteventura’s stark volcanic landscapes and extraordinary light, Casa Montelongo is a place where time slows, architecture speaks, and silence becomes a luxury. Housed within a restored 19th-century Canarian residence once central to the island’s cultural life, the property offers an intimate retreat shaped by heritage, art, and contemporary restraint. More than a stay, Casa Montelongo is an invitation to inhabit the island’s rhythm, light, and memory.

Overview
Casa Montelongo was once the home of the Montelongo family, a prominent and culturally influential lineage that helped shape La Oliva’s social and artistic life during the 19th century. The house served not only as a family residence but also as a theatre and gathering place, hosting celebrations, performances, and intellectual exchange. When Raúl Ortega Santana and Francisco de Borja Juliá Blanch discovered the property, they immediately sensed that while time had worn its surfaces, its spirit remained intact. Their vision was not to reinvent it, but to listen to it.
The restoration was led by architect Néstor Pérez Batista, guided by a philosophy of continuity rather than contrast. Traditional materials stone, clay, lime, wood and glass were preserved and reinterpreted, allowing the architecture to remain deeply rooted in place while embracing a contemporary language. The result is a house where interior and exterior dissolve into one another, where patios act as living rooms, and where light becomes an architectural element in itself.
Casa Montelongo is composed of two independent units: The Old Theatre and The Old House, each designed for two guests. Both share a central pool and solarium, reinforcing a sense of calm and privacy. Interiors are minimalist yet warm, defined by generous volumes, carefully framed views, and a restrained palette that enhances the island’s natural tones. Art plays a central role, with works by Spanish artists including César Manrique, Ildefonso Aguilar, Marcos Colombarini, and a sculptural installation by Óscar Latuag inspired by cochineal, orchilla, and barilla stone.
Today, Casa Montelongo is an adults-only retreat dedicated to quietness, contemplation, and slow living. Breakfast made from local, seasonal products is delivered daily, and a discreet concierge service helps guests explore the island at their own pace. It is a place for those who seek not entertainment, but depth. Not escape, but presence. Here, architecture becomes shelter, art becomes atmosphere, and Fuerteventura reveals itself slowly, honestly, and without noise.
