Azul Nomeolvides

A secluded eco-retreat in Bacalar

Azul Nomeolvides unfolds quietly along the shores of Bacalar’s luminous lagoon, where jungle, water, and light exist in near-perfect balance. More than a place to stay, it is an invitation to slow down, disconnect from excess, and re-engage with the rhythms of nature. Here, time stretches gently, guided by the movement of the water and the hush of the surrounding forest.

Overview

Set at the edge of Bacalar’s famed Laguna de los Siete Colores, Azul Nomeolvides occupies a privileged position that feels both immersed and protected. The retreat sits just outside the town, close enough to explore its cultural life while remaining enveloped by jungle and silence. From the elevated cabins, guests look out across ever-shifting shades of blue, framed by dense tropical vegetation and open sky.

The property is the vision of architect Samantha Calzada and photographer Bernardo Buendía, who conceived Azul Nomeolvides as both a home and a sanctuary. Six A-frame cabins rise on stilts, designed according to bioclimatic principles that prioritize natural ventilation, minimal land disturbance, and sensory connection to place. Materials are locally sourced, forms are simple, and interiors are intentionally restrained, allowing nature to remain the central presence.

Sustainability is not an added feature but the foundation of the experience. Azul Nomeolvides operates completely off-grid, generating its own electricity, recycling wastewater, and using only biodegradable products. The architecture preserves nearly all of the land in its natural state, creating biological corridors and maintaining the integrity of the ecosystem. Guests are gently encouraged to unplug, with limited Wi-Fi and an atmosphere designed for presence rather than productivity.

Days unfold slowly, shaped by lagoon swims, quiet moments in hammocks, and excursions to nearby Mayan archaeological sites and artisan workshops. Evenings settle into stillness as light fades over the water and the jungle hums softly in the background. Azul Nomeolvides offers a form of luxury defined not by excess, but by intention, care, and a deep respect for the land that sustains it.
