Brücke 49

A small design stay in Vals

Brücke 49 is a place that resists urgency. Set within the quiet alpine village of Vals, it offers a kind of hospitality that unfolds slowly, shaped by time, craft, and human presence rather than service protocols or spectacle. More home than hotel, Brücke 49 invites guests into a lived-in world where design, architecture, and daily rituals create space for reflection, connection, and stillness. It is a retreat for those who value meaning over momentum, and atmosphere over amenities.

Overview

Brücke 49 is composed of two distinct yet deeply connected houses: the Pension and the Herberge. Together, they form a small, design-led sanctuary that reinterprets the traditional mountain stay through a contemporary, human lens. The Pension offers four guest rooms and generous shared spaces that encourage interaction without obligation, while the Herberge extends the experience through three spacious apartments designed for longer stays, families, or small groups seeking independence without isolation. Both buildings function as parts of one shared home, not as separate accommodations.

The architectural roots of Brücke 49 are inseparable from its identity. The Pension was built between 1900 and 1902 by the Valser Furger family using local stone, Valser granite, and wide solid wooden planks that remain intact today. The Herberge, dating back to 1775, is a classic Valser house that was carefully renovated in 2019. Rather than erasing age, both buildings celebrate it. Stone walls, old window frames, heavy granite roofs, and wooden floors quietly anchor the interiors in place and history, creating a sense of permanence rarely felt in contemporary hospitality.

Interior design at Brücke 49 is the work of owner and designer Ruth Kramer, whose approach is guided by restraint, tactility, and emotional intelligence rather than trend or decoration. Furniture, objects, textiles, books, and ceramics are curated rather than styled, collected over time and chosen for how they feel to live with. Scandinavian clarity blends with alpine solidity, creating spaces that feel warm, thoughtful, and deeply personal. Nothing here feels performative. Every room carries the sense of having been inhabited, not staged.

Life at Brücke 49 follows the rhythm of Vals itself. Mornings begin with freshly baked bread, local cheeses, organic yoghurt, and eggs prepared to preference, shared in communal spaces or enjoyed quietly. Guests in the Herberge find a bag of warm bread waiting at their door. Days unfold slowly, shaped by weather, appetite, and curiosity. Outside, the Valser mountains offer hiking, skiing, river dips, and long walks through unspoiled terrain. Inside, shared kitchens, libraries, gardens, and fireside corners invite conversation or solitude. Brücke 49 does not instruct guests how to stay; it creates the conditions for presence, connection, and genuine rest.

“Brücke 49 is more than just a guesthouse; it is a place where design, comfort, and a welcoming atmosphere come together to create a truly special stay.”

Tips & Recommendations

01 / 05

Nearest Airport

Zurich (ZRH) is the most common international gateway. From there, Vals is best reached by train plus a final local connection. If you are coming from within Switzerland, connections via Chur are typically the most straightforward.

02 / 05

Getting There

Arrive by train to Chur, then continue deeper into Graubünden with the local rail and bus network toward Vals. The final stretch is scenic and slow in the best way. If you drive, plan for mountain roads, winter conditions, and extra time. Vals rewards unhurried arrivals.

03 / 05

Best Time to Visit

Late spring through early autumn for hiking, mountain air, and long light filled days. Winter for snowy calm, slow skiing, and the deep pleasure of returning indoors after cold air and hot water. Shoulder seasons are especially good if you want Vals at its quietest.

04 / 05

What to Bring

Layers for real mountain weather, proper walking shoes, swimwear for Therme Vals, and something comfortable for staying in: reading, journaling, slow mornings. If you like river dips, bring a towel you can sacrifice to a little adventure.

05 / 05

Before You Arrive

Come with the mindset that this is a home you step into, not a hotel you pass through. You will get more out of Brücke 49 if you lean into its rhythm: use the common spaces, linger over breakfast, talk to the people you meet, and let the village guide your days instead of a tight itinerary. If you are traveling with friends or family, consider a longer stay in the Herberge so you can live a little, not just visit.
