Casa na Terra
An earth sheltered design house near Monsaraz
Casa na Terra feels less like a destination and more like a quiet revelation. Hidden within the rolling hills of Alentejo, near the medieval village of Monsaraz, the house emerges gently from the earth, almost as if it had always been there. It is a place discovered slowly, where architecture, landscape, and human presence exist in careful balance. From the moment you arrive, the world seems to soften, inviting you to slow down and recalibrate your rhythm.

Overview
Casa na Terra entered the Silent Living family through friendship and generosity, the most honest way a house can reveal itself. The first visit was not for business or architecture, but for a long lunch shared with dear friends. That initial encounter carried everything Silent Living stands for: hospitality, warmth, time spent together, and an effortless connection to nature. It was immediately clear that this was a home meant to be cared for and shared, not simply admired.
Set in the heart of Alentejo, the house is a masterclass in restraint. Designed by architect Manuel Aires Mateus, Casa na Terra dissolves into the surrounding topography, minimizing its impact on the landscape and preserving uninterrupted views of the hills and the distant Alqueva waters. The building does not rise above the land but folds into it, allowing the terrain to remain dominant. Only the patios and the sculptural dome reveal its presence.
Inside, the experience is one of openness without exposure. Three ensuite bedrooms each connect to private patios, creating a sense of intimacy while remaining visually and emotionally tied to the outdoors. The kitchen and living spaces open toward a larger central patio, where light, air, and landscape flow freely through the house. Every movement feels natural, guided by the geometry of the space rather than imposed circulation.
At the heart of the home lies the dome, a gathering place that feels carved from the hillside itself. It is where conversations linger, meals stretch late into the evening, and silence feels companionable rather than empty. Casa na Terra is not about spectacle or excess. It is about presence, about sharing food, stories, and time in a space that quietly supports connection. Awarded ArchDaily’s Building of the Year in 2020, the house stands as both architectural achievement and lived experience.

“Silent Living is not about escaping life, but about returning to its essence. In the stillness, guests often rediscover clarity, beauty in the simple things, and a renewed sense of rhythm.”
