Corte Manfredi

A restored historic courtyard house in Salento

Corte Manfredi is a quiet refuge hidden within the historic heart of Alessano, where Salento’s layered past meets a contemporary way of living that values time, space, and restraint. Restored from abandonment with deep respect for history, this intimate guest house offers an experience rooted in place rather than performance. It is not designed to impress loudly, but to be felt slowly, revealing Salento through silence, stone, and light.

Overview

Corte Manfredi occupies a centuries-old courtyard once belonging to one of Alessano’s most important noble families, the Manfredi lineage. Set along an ancient alley defined by rare flying buttresses, mosaics, vaulted ceilings, and stone portals, the property carries the architectural memory of Salento’s Renaissance and post-medieval prosperity. Abandoned for decades, the buildings were brought back to life through a rigorous conservative restoration that preserved every recoverable element, from mosaic floors and fireplaces to wall niches and original proportions.

Rather than imposing a new aesthetic, the restoration allows old and new to coexist in balance. Historic materials such as Lecce stone, tuff, lime, and vaulted masonry are paired with carefully chosen contemporary lighting, custom furnishings, and restored antique pieces crafted by local artisans. The result is not theatrical nostalgia, but a living architecture where light, texture, and shadow reveal the building’s age without freezing it in time.

The rooms, identified by their original historic numbering, each have a distinct character shaped by their volumes and past function. All open onto the shared courtyard, once the social heart of village life, now reinterpreted as a protected, intimate space of calm. Comfort is present but never overstated. This is not a place of excess, but of intention, where silence, privacy, and spatial clarity define the experience.

Staying at Corte Manfredi is an invitation to adopt Salento’s slower rhythm. Days begin with unhurried breakfasts on the terrace, made with local ingredients and traditional recipes. From here, guests explore the surrounding villages, coastlines, and countryside before returning to the quiet embrace of the courtyard. Corte Manfredi is not a destination designed to keep you inside, but a place that makes coming back feel essential.
