El Guayacán
An adults-only hilltop retreat above Zipolite
El Guayacán rises quietly above Playa Zipolite, where the jungle thins into open sky and the Pacific stretches uninterrupted below. This adults-only retreat is designed as a pause rather than a destination, a place where the body naturally slows and the senses recalibrate. From the first moment, the atmosphere encourages presence: light moving across whitewashed surfaces, the ocean visible from every angle, and a sense of calm that feels deliberate rather than curated. El Guayacán is not about escape, but about returning to a simpler, more attentive way of being.

Overview
El Guayacán is the personal vision of owners and hosts Martti Wichmann and Fridtjof Flucke, who arrived in Zipolite in 2017 and felt an immediate, intuitive connection to the place. With years of experience across hospitality, travel, and retail, they recognized something missing: a refined, design-forward retreat that would respect the land, integrate into the community, and offer an experience shaped by intention rather than trend. Their search led them to a secluded hillside site, set between a seasonal creek and open sky, elevated enough to feel removed while remaining deeply connected to the town below.
The architecture emerged through close collaboration with Permacasco Arquitectura, artist Juan-Carlos Rodriguez Artigas, and architect Thomas Flechel, resulting in a structure that responds naturally to climate, topography, and light. Interiors are understated and warm, defined by native woods, whitewashed concrete, and carefully chosen artworks that add texture without excess. Indoor and outdoor spaces flow seamlessly into one another, dissolving boundaries and allowing air, light, and landscape to become part of daily life. A long saltwater lap pool stretches toward the horizon, mirroring the sea beyond.
The property comprises six serene accommodations, each oriented toward the ocean and designed for privacy and quiet comfort. King-size beds, generous terraces, and thoughtful layouts define every unit, while select spaces feature open-air bathrooms or full kitchens. One two-bedroom residence sits at the highest point of the property, offering sweeping views and complete seclusion. While each space has its own character, all share a common intention: to create an environment that feels calm, grounded, and deeply respectful of its setting.
Sustainability is embedded into El Guayacán’s daily rhythm. The retreat operates on solar power, collects and reuses rainwater, and follows a low-impact philosophy that reduces pressure on local resources. Rather than positioning sustainability as a feature, it is treated as a responsibility and a way of life. Below, Zipolite unfolds with its distinctive spirit of openness and authenticity, shaped by sand paths, sun-bleached cafés, and a community that values freedom over formality. El Guayacán remains just above it all: close enough to engage, far enough to feel held in stillness.
