Surrounded by wild fynbos and more than fifty kilometres of protected shoreline, this intimate five suite eco lodge offers a rare balance of barefoot freedom and thoughtful luxury. It is a place where whales breach offshore, days unfold in rhythm with tide and light, and nature quietly shapes every experience.

Overview

Morukuru Beach Lodge sits at Koppie Alleen within the 36 000 hectare De Hoop Nature Reserve, a UNESCO recognised conservation area in the Overberg region along South Africa’s Garden Route. The landscape is striking and elemental. Limestone cliffs, rock pools, shifting dunes and a 19 kilometre Ramsar listed wetland create one of the country’s most biodiverse coastal ecosystems. From June through early November, southern right whales gather offshore, making this one of the world’s finest land based whale watching destinations.

The lodge itself is intimate and considered, with just five expansive suites, including two Ocean View Family Suites and a Honeymoon Suite. Each suite spans approximately 90 square metres and opens onto private terraces or balconies. Interiors are calm and coastal, with underfloor heating, fireplaces, deep soaking tubs and oversized daybeds positioned for sea gazing. Floor to ceiling glass doors invite the landscape inside, while the absence of air conditioning reflects the lodge’s fully off grid philosophy powered by solar energy and pellet burners.

Life at Morukuru Beach Lodge moves between activity and restoration. Guided marine walks reveal tidal ecosystems at low tide. Fynbos hikes and 4×4 nature drives explore the reserve’s inland biodiversity. Guests can mountain bike, sand board, snorkel in protected rock pools, or simply settle into a dune top sundowner as dolphins pass offshore. The beaches in front of the lodge are wild and restorative, perfect for long contemplative walks or a private picnic assembled by the kitchen.

Meals are generous and locally rooted. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included, with most produce sourced from regional farmers and wineries. Guests may dine in the lodge’s elegant dining room, gather for African themed evenings at Bites Beach Café, or request a picnic basket for a private lunch among dunes and fynbos. Families are warmly welcomed, and the atmosphere remains relaxed, personal and quietly attentive throughout.
