Rosso House & Farm

A design-led farmhouse retreat in Bavaria’s Allgäu

Rosso is a farmhouse of possibilities in the hills of southern Bavaria, where time slows and nature sets the pace. Set within a restored historic barn in the Allgäu, this intimate retreat invites guests to step away from urgency and rediscover simplicity. It is not a hotel with a program, but an open house shaped by seasons, silence, and the beauty of imperfection.

Overview

Rosso began as a personal search for a slower, more meaningful way of living. After years of city life and constant movement, founder Christian Mueller envisioned a place rooted in nature and authenticity. Inspired by Italian agriturismi and guided by the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi, the old farmhouse was carefully transformed into a retreat that honors age, patina, and quiet beauty rather than polished perfection.

The three apartments, La Bella, La Famiglia, and La Grande, are housed within the former barn. Original beams, lime plaster, copper bathtubs, and natural materials create interiors that feel both grounded and refined. Each unit features a fully equipped kitchen, ecological bedding, generous living spaces, and expansive views over meadows and mountains. There is no rush here, and no imposed schedule. Guests shape their own days.

Beyond the apartments, shared spaces deepen the experience. The Atelier der langen Weile with its fireplace and long communal table invites conversation or cultivated boredom. A studio offers room for yoga, meditation, or creative work. The sauna, swimming pond, sun terrace, pizza and bread oven, and small farm shop extend life outdoors and encourage seasonal rituals.

The surrounding Allgäu landscape completes the picture. Forests of the Adelegg mountains, the Iller river, rolling hills, and alpine lakes offer movement for those who seek it. Yet Rosso’s greatest luxury remains stillness. Whether staying for a family holiday, a retreat, or quiet reflection, guests leave with a renewed sense of space, clarity, and connection to the natural world.

“Wabi-sabi nurtures all that is authentic by acknowledging three simple realities: nothing lasts, nothing is finished, and nothing is perfect.”
