The Bolder

Off-grid design cabins floating above Lysefjord

The Bolder is an architectural experience suspended between land, sky, and water. High above Norway’s Lysefjord, six off-grid cabins sit at the very edge of the landscape, offering uninterrupted views of one of the world’s most iconic fjords. This is not simply a place to stay, but a place to feel scale, silence, and exposure. Designed for those drawn to wild beauty and thoughtful design, The Bolder offers a front-row seat to nature at its most powerful, stripped of distraction and grounded in material honesty.

Overview

The story of The Bolder begins in 2010, when entrepreneur Tom Norland acquired 170 hectares of untouched land overlooking Lysefjord. Initially envisioned as a collection of modest hermit huts, the site soon demanded something more ambitious. Something that could stand up to the grandeur of its surroundings without overpowering them. The result was a bold architectural experiment: cabins that do not dominate the landscape, but instead hover within it.

The first chapter introduced the Sky Lodges, designed by architect John Birger Grytdal from Norgeshus. These two-floor, cube-shaped structures balance dramatically on a single steel pillar drilled deep into the ground. Wrapped in Canadian cedar and defined by floor-to-ceiling glazing, the Sky Lodges offer an extraordinary sense of suspension, as if the fjord unfolds directly beneath your feet.

A decade later, the project expanded with four additional cabins, the Star Lodges, designed by Norwegian architecture practice Snøhetta. Named Stylten, Myra, Stjerna, and Eldhuset, these one-room cabins are gently placed along the edge of the fjord, carefully positioned to blend into the terrain. Materials were sourced directly from the site: granite cut from the ground reused in concrete, pine trees set aside for future use. Every decision reflects a deep respect for place and process.

Inside, the experience is deliberately restrained. Dark oak ceilings and walls, concrete floors, and earthy tones mirror the surrounding rock and forest. Vipp kitchens, furniture, and lighting bring warmth, functionality, and timeless Scandinavian clarity. Whether returning from a long hike or watching clouds roll through the fjord, the cabins feel like sheltered observatories, offering comfort without interrupting the raw drama beyond the glass.

“My intention was to give visitors a front row view to one of the best-known fjords in the world. The border between inside and outside had to be blurred to convey the feeling of floating in nature.”
