The James Bradley

A design-led boutique hotel in Bradley Beach

Set one block from the Atlantic in the quiet seaside town of Bradley Beach, The James Bradley breathes new life into a 121-year-old coastal property. With just seventeen rooms, it redefines the Jersey Shore experience through restraint, craftsmanship, and a distinctly residential atmosphere. More house than hotel, it offers an edited, elegant retreat shaped by design, detail, and a slower coastal rhythm.

Overview

The James Bradley was conceived as a modern interpretation of a coastal house. Rather than leaning into nostalgia or excess, the design embraces minimalism and material honesty. Curated by Manhattan-based designer Sebastian Zuckowicki and guided by owner George DiStefano’s creative direction, the interiors feel layered yet restrained. Clean lines, muted tones, and handcrafted elements establish a quiet confidence that reflects both heritage and contemporary sensibility.

The 16-key main house and three-bedroom bungalow balance intimacy with comfort. Suites and guestrooms feature original clawfoot tubs or rain showers, Parachute linens, Flamingo Estate bath products, and thoughtful lighting that softens the architecture. Many furnishings and objects stem from DiStefano’s own design studio, creating a cohesive aesthetic that feels personal rather than staged.

Guest life centers around shared yet private-feeling spaces. The wraparound covered porch, secluded courtyard, and fire pit invite unhurried afternoons. The lounge offers a calm setting for tea or a nightcap, while daily turndown service subtly enhances the sense of care. Breakfast highlights locally inspired flavors, from homemade granolas to freshly baked pastries, grounding the experience in place without overstatement.

Its location defines the rhythm of the stay. Nestled in Bradley Beach, just over an hour from Manhattan and Philadelphia, the hotel offers proximity without pressure. The beach is steps away, Asbury Park’s creative pulse is minutes down the road, and yet the property itself remains composed and still. Returning after a day in the sun feels like coming home to a private coastal residence rather than a public hotel.

"Design, to me, is about storytelling — editing until only what matters remains. The James Bradley was built with a sense of restraint: clean lines, honest materials, and texture in place of ornament. It’s meant to feel considered, not curated."
