Verwalterinnenhaus

Historic apartments within a revived medieval estate

In the small Hanseatic town of Werben, the Verwalterinnenhaus stands at the center of the Komturei Werben, a historic estate whose origins reach back to the 12th century. Once the administrative house of the Johanniter order, it has been carefully restored into six apartments that combine historic structure, ecological materials, and quiet rural surroundings. Today the building offers a place for retreat, creative work, and slow living within one of Germany’s most atmospheric countryside regions.

Overview

The Verwalterinnenhaus stands at the center of the Komturei Werben, a historic estate whose origins reach back to the 12th century. Once the administrative house of the Johanniter order, the building formed part of a larger complex that shaped life in this small Hanseatic town for centuries. Today the ensemble is gradually being revived as an ecological model project for living, working, and hospitality in rural Germany, reconnecting the site with both its architectural heritage and the surrounding landscape.

The Verwalterinnenhaus is the first building to be carefully restored within this vision. Built in the 19th century on older foundations, the house has been renovated with a clear approach: preserve what carries history and introduce contemporary elements only where needed. Historic windows were repaired, old bricks and roof tiles reused, and new architectural additions such as balconies and dormers integrated with restraint, allowing the original structure to remain the defining presence.

Inside, six apartments unfold across the garden level, raised ground floor, and attic. Each offers its own character and relationship to the gardens and courtyard of the Komturei. Interiors combine historic brickwork with natural materials such as clay and lime plaster, reed ceilings, and wooden surfaces. The atmosphere is simple and grounded, allowing the architecture, light, and surrounding greenery to shape the experience of the space.

Beneath the building, a vaulted cellar that predates the current structure has been transformed into a shared sauna and quiet area for guests. From here, days often flow naturally between architecture and landscape: cycling along the Elbe dikes, walking through Werben’s historic streets, or simply spending time in the courtyard. The Verwalterinnenhaus offers a slower rhythm of stay, where history, design, and the calm of the Altmark countryside quietly come together.
