Vipp Chimney House

A design guesthouse in Copenhagen

Vipp Chimney House is a bold architectural statement in the heart of Copenhagen, where industrial heritage and contemporary design meet in a space that feels both monumental and intimate. Once a water pumping station crowned by a towering chimney, the building has been carefully reborn as a private guesthouse that celebrates craftsmanship, proportion, and material honesty. This is not simply a place to stay, but a place to inhabit, where history is preserved, design is intentional, and everyday living becomes an aesthetic experience.

Overview

Originally built in 1902, the Chimney House served as a vital piece of Copenhagen’s industrial infrastructure. Its transformation, led by Danish architect Studio David Thulstrup, respects the raw character of the original structure while introducing a modern architectural language defined by restraint and clarity. Rather than masking its past, the building embraces it. Steel, glass, terrazzo, and concrete coexist with the original chimney, now framed as a sculptural centerpiece beneath a large skylight.

The interior unfolds across approximately 200 square meters over two levels. At its heart lies an open-plan living space that integrates kitchen, dining, and lounge areas into one continuous volume. The fully equipped Vipp kitchen anchors the space, designed not as a showpiece but as a functional, everyday tool elevated by timeless design. Large glass surfaces, steel-framed doors, and custom flooring allow light to move freely, enhancing the sense of scale without sacrificing intimacy.

Upstairs, two bedrooms overlook the dramatic atrium below. The master bedroom opens onto a small private balcony, offering a quiet moment of morning light in the middle of the city. Curtains, textures, and materials soften the industrial bones, creating a calm, cocooned atmosphere for rest. Bathrooms are understated yet luxurious, continuing the dialogue between utility and elegance.

Throughout the house, architectural details take center stage: a modern steel staircase, terrazzo floors, soaring ceilings, and uninterrupted visual connections between levels. The old chimney, once purely functional, now becomes a poetic reminder of the building’s past. Staying at Vipp Chimney House feels like stepping inside a carefully composed design narrative, one that balances heritage with modern living in a distinctly Copenhagen way.
