Vipp Salaca River

A secluded riverside design cabin in Latvia

Vipp Salaca River is a rare retreat where architecture, history, and wilderness exist in quiet balance. Set on the banks of Latvia’s fast-flowing Salaca River, this former fisherman’s house from 1876 has been carefully relocated and reimagined as a secluded design hideaway within a protected national park. Surrounded by forest, water, and open skies, it offers an experience defined by stillness, simplicity, and deep connection to nature.

Overview

Originally built in 1876 and once used as a roadhouse between Riga and Wolmar, the log house that now forms Vipp Salaca River carries a layered history rooted in movement, shelter, and the river itself. Each timber was meticulously dismantled, numbered, and rebuilt on a new foundation of stone within the Salaca River Valley, allowing the structure to begin a new life without losing its original character. The result is a home that feels deeply anchored to place, both physically and emotionally.

Inside, the house has been entirely reconfigured to suit contemporary living while preserving the density and intimacy of traditional log architecture. Dark timber walls and ceilings create a cocoon-like atmosphere, softened by carefully chosen Vipp furniture, neutral textiles, and vintage and locally sourced objects. Large picture windows frame the river, turning the changing landscape into a living backdrop that shapes the rhythm of the day.

The heart of the house is an open-plan living space oriented toward the water. A black Vipp V1 kitchen unfolds into a combined dining and lounge area, accompanied by a fireplace with a mirrored wall that reflects the surrounding forest and river light back into the room. Upstairs, the master bedroom overlooks the living space below and features a freestanding bathtub, creating a sense of openness without sacrificing privacy.

Life at Vipp Salaca River is guided by the outdoors. Days unfold according to weather, light, and season, whether spent kayaking along the river, walking through old-growth woodland, or soaking in the wood-fired hot tub on the terrace. This is not a place for schedules or distractions, but for slowing down, paying attention, and letting nature set the pace.
