In the historic village of Espita, tucked into Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula far from the coastal crowds, Casona Los Cedros stands as a refined colonial residence reimagined for contemporary travelers. This eight-room boutique hotel in Yucatán blends restored architecture, local craftsmanship and thoughtful cuisine into an experience rooted deeply in place. Founded by architect Laura Lecué and her husband Alan Montfort, Casona Los Cedros is more than a stay in Espita. It is an intentional pause, where heritage, design and community converge in quiet harmony.

RESTORING A COLONIAL RESIDENCE IN ESPITA, YUCATÁN

When Laura Lecué first encountered Espita, she was drawn to its understated beauty and architectural legacy. As an architect, she recognized not only the potential of the property, but the responsibility that came with restoring it.

“When I discovered Espita, I was immediately captivated by its timeless charm and the richness of its cultural heritage,” Laura reflects. “As an architect, I saw the opportunity to restore and reinterpret this property as a living dialogue between past and present.”

The original colonial structure was carefully preserved. Thick masonry walls, high ceilings and shaded corridors remain central to the design. Rather than impose a contemporary aesthetic, Laura and Alan chose to refine what already existed, allowing the architecture of Espita to guide their vision.

“Cedros became a way to express that vision,” Laura explains. “An intimate, design-forward space that honors the soul of Yucatán.”

The result is one of the most distinctive colonial boutique hotels in Yucatán, where authenticity is not staged but embedded in structure.

YUCATECAN CRAFTSMANSHIP AND CONTEMPORARY DESIGN

Casona Los Cedros reflects a deliberate balance between colonial heritage and modern restraint. Materials speak first. Chukum plaster walls, handcrafted wooden doors, stone floors and woven natural fibers define the interiors. Each element was sourced or produced locally.

“We let the materials speak,” Laura says. “Chukum walls, handcrafted woodwork, natural fibers and stone, all used with restraint to create calm and connection.”

Local carpenters from Espita crafted doors, windows and furniture. A family of artisans created lighting fixtures from native bejuco vines. The project unfolded through collaboration with the community, reinforcing its authenticity as a design hotel in Espita.

“What sets the property apart is this seamless blend of culture, cuisine and place, crafted with soul and intention,” Laura adds.

Rather than dominate its surroundings, the architecture frames the village. Gardens soften the structure. Tropical vegetation surrounds the eight rooms, creating a sense of intimacy without isolation. Every space feels grounded in Yucatán’s climate, light and rhythm.

“Cedros became a way to express that vision, an intimate, design-forward space that honors the soul of Yucatán.”

A BOUTIQUE STAY DEFINED BY YUCATECAN CUISINE

At the center of the experience is Casona de los Cedros, the hotel’s restaurant led by Chef Jorge Ildefonso. Here, Yucatecan culinary traditions are reinterpreted with subtle contemporary precision. Ingredients are sourced from nearby producers. Many herbs come directly from the property’s garden.

Meals unfold without haste. Breakfast beneath shaded arcades. Dinner beneath soft lantern light. The atmosphere encourages conversation rather than spectacle.

Beyond the hotel, guests are invited to explore Espita’s living traditions. Morning markets bring together local farmers and artisans. Hammock weavers, woodworkers and honey producers continue generational crafts within walking distance.

For travelers seeking an authentic stay in Yucatán that moves beyond coastal resort experiences, Espita offers a quieter narrative. Casona Los Cedros becomes the lens through which that narrative is understood.

A SANCTUARY FOR MEANINGFUL CULTURAL CONNECTION IN MEXICO

Casona Los Cedros attracts travelers seeking depth rather than itinerary density. International visitors often arrive after fast-paced tours through Chichén Itzá, Mérida or Valladolid. Espita becomes their deliberate pause.

“Our guests are seeking a deeper reconnection, with culture, nature and themselves,” Laura explains. “For many, their stop in Espita becomes an intentional break.”

The process of creating the hotel mirrored that philosophy. Working within a small Yucatecan town required patience and adaptability. Construction challenges became opportunities for deeper collaboration.

“Collaborating with local artisans became one of the most rewarding aspects,” Laura reflects. “It taught us the value of patience and trust in the process.”

Future plans focus on depth rather than expansion. Artist residencies, wellness gatherings and further community collaborations are envisioned, reinforcing Casona Los Cedros as a cultural anchor within Espita.

As a boutique hotel in Yucatán defined by design integrity and local engagement, Casona Los Cedros offers something increasingly rare. Not just beautiful rooms, but meaningful context. Not just architecture, but continuity.

In the treasured village of Espita, time does not stop. It simply slows. And within those slower hours, the true spirit of Yucatán reveals itself.

“Collaborating with local artisans became one of the most rewarding aspects, and it taught us the value of patience and trust in the process.”
