Galopina: A Serene Boutique Retreat in the Yucatán Jungle

Hidden within the low jungle of Yucatán, just beyond Mérida and inside the protected Cenotes Ring State Reserve, Galopina unfolds quietly. It is not a hotel in the conventional sense, but a house shaped by intention. A place where time softens, where nature sets the rhythm, and where hospitality feels instinctive rather than performed. Here, architecture, landscape, and daily life move together in quiet alignment. The experience is not about what is offered, but how it is felt.

A RETURN HOME, A DREAM REALIZED

Galopina began long before its doors opened. For Elisa Navarrete, the idea was rooted in something deeply personal. After years abroad, living in Paris with her husband Guillaume, there was a growing desire to return to Mexico, not only for herself, but for their children.

“Life in Paris was beautiful, but deep inside, I felt a strong pull to return home. I wanted our children to grow up surrounded by the warmth, color, and spontaneity of my culture.”

The turning point came unexpectedly, during a stay in a small hotel in Portugal. It revealed something simple yet powerful. That a place could be intimate, soulful, and deeply personal, while still welcoming others into it.

From that moment, the idea took root. Within a year, they left Europe and returned to Mexico. In February 2022, Galopina came to life.

“It is part of our family. The name comes from our last name, Galopin, and we added an ‘A’ because she is a woman. Thoughtful, loving, full of character. A place that makes you feel at home.”

A PLACE SHAPED BY LAND AND MEMORY

When Elisa and Guillaume first arrived on the land, there was nothing. No structures, no paths, only dense vegetation and silence. Access itself required effort, clearing a way through the jungle step by step.

In that process, they discovered something unexpected. An old trail, once used in the nineteenth century by a nearby hacienda to transport henequén. A path carrying the memory of Yucatán’s past.

“That path felt meaningful. It carried the history of the region. It was clear that Galopina had to be built there.”

Today, guests arrive by crossing that same path. It is more than an entrance. It is a transition. A subtle shift from the outside world into a different pace of living.

The surrounding landscape continues to define the experience. Native vegetation, birds, and the constant presence of nature create an atmosphere that feels immersive rather than curated.

“Staying at Galopina is like being at your Yucatecan home. You arrive surrounded by jungle, birds, and silence. From that moment on, time changes pace.”

LIVING SLOWLY, EXPERIENCING FULLY

Life at Galopina is shaped by small, deliberate moments. Nothing is rushed, and nothing is imposed.

Mornings begin quietly, often with homemade breakfast shared slowly. Afternoons unfold in hammocks, under trees, or beside the pool. Evenings gather around soft light, where candles are lit and the sounds of the jungle take over.

“What makes Galopina special is the little things. The smell of cedar wood, the scent of cake baking in the afternoon, the fireflies that visit while guests enjoy dinner under the stars.”

The five suites are designed to extend this relationship with the landscape. Some remain close to the ground, surrounded by vegetation, while others rise above the canopy, opening to sky and horizon. Each one offers privacy without isolation, simplicity without absence.

Hospitality here feels personal because it is personal. Every detail reflects the presence of its founders, not as hosts performing a role, but as people sharing something they have built with care.

“We take our guests’ stay seriously. But it is also about warmth, spontaneity, and making people feel at home.”

A GATEWAY TO THE YUCATÁN

While Galopina encourages stillness, it also opens outward. Its location allows for quiet exploration of a region rich in culture, history, and tradition.

Nearby cenotes offer moments of immersion in freshwater landscapes shaped over centuries. Villages reveal everyday life through simple details, mototaxis passing by, women in traditional dress, local celebrations unfolding without spectacle.

“We always encourage guests to visit nearby villages, especially during local celebrations. Just driving through is already an experience.”

The recommendations are not generic. They are personal. A beekeeper who shares his craft. A family garden preserving ancestral knowledge. A small restaurant where meals feel deeply rooted in place.

These encounters create a different kind of travel experience. One that is not about ticking places off a list, but about understanding a place through the people who live there.

A QUIET APPROACH TO SUSTAINABILITY

Sustainability at Galopina is not positioned as a concept. It is part of daily life.

One of the most tangible expressions of this is their small apiary. Introduced through local relationships, it became both a learning process and a meaningful addition to the experience.

“Every morning, our guests enjoy honey that comes directly from our bees. It is something simple, but it connects them to the land in a very real way.”

This approach reflects a broader philosophy. One that values proximity, community, and small-scale practices over abstraction. Hospitality here is not separate from its environment. It is part of it.

A PLACE THAT STAYS WITH YOU

There is a quiet clarity to what Galopina offers. It does not try to be many things. It simply holds space for something increasingly rare.

“We once had guests who took a hammock, a jar of our honey, and our playlist back home. Later, they told us they were listening to it with a glass of wine, thinking about their time here. That is exactly what we hoped for.”

That is the measure of a place like Galopina. Not just the experience itself, but what lingers after.

A slower rhythm. A sense of connection. A memory that does not fade when the journey ends.

In the Yucatán jungle, where light filters through leaves and silence becomes presence, Galopina offers something simple, yet profound.

The space to return to what feels essential.

“It is part of our family. A place that makes you feel at home, with warmth, spontaneity, and heart in every detail.”
