On the largest island of the Azores, just minutes from Ponta Delgada yet surrounded by citrus groves and open countryside, Solar Branco Eco Estate offers one of the most distinctive boutique stays in São Miguel. This restored 150-year-old Azorean manor has been transformed into an adults-only eco hotel that balances heritage architecture, sustainability and refined comfort. A RESTORED 19TH-CENTURY ESTATE IN THE HEART OF SÃO MIGUEL
When Ali Bullock and his wife Caroline first discovered Solar Branco, the estate was in ruins. Built more than 150 years ago, the historic property had been abandoned for decades. What followed was a five-year restoration that preserved the soul of the original Azorean architecture while integrating modern comforts.
“Built over 150 years ago, the estate was in ruins when we took on the restoration effort,” Ali explains. “Over five years we thoughtfully blended new with old to showcase the building’s history as well as the sustainable offerings we have at the estate.”
Original stone walls were reinforced rather than replaced. Traditional volumes were respected. Gardens that had grown wild were carefully revived, allowing native wildlife to return. The result is not a reinvention, but a respectful evolution, where old and new coexist seamlessly within one of the most authentic eco hotels in the Azores.
AN ADULTS ONLY BOUTIQUE HOTEL NEAR PONTA DELGADA
Solar Branco Eco Estate is reserved for guests aged sixteen and above, creating a calm and contemplative atmosphere that appeals to couples and independent travelers seeking an adults-only hotel in the Azores. With only eight accommodations, the scale remains personal and refined.
“Located on the largest island in The Azores and a short drive from Ponta Delgada, Solar Branco stands out as one of Portugal’s leading eco luxury hotels,” Ali says. “This adults only estate balances comfort and luxury with unique views and location.”
Interiors reflect the surrounding landscape. Raw wood tables, neutral palettes and handcrafted details echo São Miguel’s natural textures. Windows frame rolling countryside and distant ocean. Each suite feels grounded rather than ornamental, offering comfort without excess.
Evenings often center around The Gin Library, home to what Ali describes as the world’s largest gin collection. As sunset light shifts across the hills, guests gather for tastings that become part of the estate’s quiet ritual, reinforcing Solar Branco’s reputation as a boutique hotel in São Miguel with personality and depth.
“We have tried to stay faithful to the origins of the buildings while adding elements from The Azores such as raw wood tables and a simple design for each suite, reflecting the calm views of the countryside around us.”

SUSTAINABLE LUXURY AND LOCAL CRAFT IN THE AZORES
Solar Branco’s identity as an eco hotel in São Miguel extends beyond architecture. Sustainability informs daily operations, sourcing and guest experience. Breakfast features seasonal fruits and local produce. In-room minibars include house-made beers. The estate actively promotes Azorean craftsmanship and small producers.
“The Solar Branco Eco Estate showcases the best of the local products we have on these beautiful islands,” Ali notes. “From our breakfast featuring seasonal fruits to our free minibar with in-house made beers, we want guests to enjoy our grounds and the island of São Miguel.”
The gardens continue to evolve as a living ecosystem rather than a decorative landscape. Orange trees bloom. Birdsong fills the air. Paths encourage wandering without structure. The experience is immersive but understated, offering guests the space to reconnect with nature without distraction.
For adventurous couples seeking a sustainable stay near Ponta Delgada that feels personal rather than performative, Solar Branco offers a compelling alternative to larger Azores resorts.
EXPLORING SÃO MIGUEL FROM SOLAR BRANCO ECO ESTATE
While the estate encourages stillness, São Miguel invites exploration. From the twin lakes of Sete Cidades to the steaming geothermal springs of Furnas and the dramatic cliffs along the Atlantic coast, the island rewards curiosity.
“Every guest that stays with us receives our exclusive guest guide to all the attractions on the island,” Ali explains. “From tourist hot spots to local gems that you will not find in most guides.”
Guests are guided toward authentic experiences such as intimate sushi dinners with Chef Joana, local craft breweries and hidden viewpoints overlooking crater lakes. Solar Branco’s location allows travelers to experience the cultural offerings of Ponta Delgada before retreating to countryside calm within minutes.
As an eco-luxury retreat in the Azores, Solar Branco positions itself not only as accommodation but as a lens through which to understand São Miguel. It is a place where heritage architecture, sustainable living and island exploration intersect with intention.
In a region defined by volcanic power and Atlantic vastness, Solar Branco Eco Estate proves that true luxury lies in preservation, proximity to nature and the freedom to slow down.
“The Solar Branco Eco Estate showcases the best of the local products we have on these beautiful islands in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. From our breakfast, that features seasonal fruits, to our free mini-bar with our in-house made beers we want guests to enjoy our grounds and the island of Sao Miguel.”
